New for 2009, Volvo Penta offers Oceanx drives

Available for customers in May 2009, Volvo Penta introduces Oceanx, a new sterndrive with a new coating and sensor technology designed to improve corrosion resistance on aluminum drives.

Oceanx drives offer new technological innovations for increased performance, environmental care, safety and easy maintenance.  Oceanx drives are designed for select Volvo Penta gasoline and diesel engines.

To combat corrosion, Oceanx drives use a state-of-the-art electro-deposit to apply a titanium-ceramic coating that greatly improves corrosion resistance on aluminum castings, making it perfect for any salt water environment.  Highly durable and flexible, the coating covers the entire drive for maximum protection.  It is also chromate free and friendly to the environment, further solidifying Volvo Penta's commitment to the environment.

The Oceanx drive also includes two brand-new features not found on any other sterndrive.  A new sterndrive oil sensor alarms boat owners when the drive oil level is low or contaminated with water.  Another sensor, mounted in the universal joint between the drive and the transom shield, alarms boat owners when water has entered into that critical area which could lead to failure.

Oceanx drives are available on 5.0GXI, 5.7Gi-300, 5.7GXI, 8.1GI and 8.1GXI gasoline engines.  Diesel engine packages include D3-130, D3-160 and D3-190 engines.  WATER-IN BELLOWS OR WATER-IN DRIVE SENSORS ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON DIESEL ENGINES.

Volvo Penta to discontinue some engines in 2010.

The new U.S. EPA emissions regulations for gas stern drives goes into effect January 1, 2010. 

After the new regulations go into effect, Volvo Penta cannot manufacture, for sale in the United States, the following engine models:

  • 3.0GL and GXi
  • 5.0GL, Gi and GXi
  • 5.7Gi and GXi

Also beginning in 2010, these engines will no longer be available for sale in the U.S.  These engines are also not available for import into the U.S.

  • 5.0GXi, 5.0GXiF OX, 5.0GXiE, 5.0GXiEF OX
  • 5.7Gi-300, 5.7Gi-300F OX, 5.7GXi, 5.7GXi-F OX, 5.7GXiE, 5.7GXiEF OX

Volvo Penta to release five new D3 engines for 2010.

Volvo Penta has announced that it will release a line of five new D3 engine models in 2010.  The new D3 is based on a newly developed 2.4 liter, 5-cylinder aluminum block engine with advanced technology, setting a new standard in the boating industry when it comes to performance, the environment and boating comfort.

The new D3 engines are available with 110, 150, 170, 200 and 220 horsepower.  The two smallest engines are considered low-revolution engines and are made for non-planing boats. 

Common rail with a pressure of 1,800 bar and piezoelectric injectors provide multiple injections per working cycle and thus even more precise fuel quantities.  Advanced and highly efficient crossflow cooling maintains an even engine temperature. 

When compared to their predecessor, these engines provide the best of both worlds, a stronger engine without sacrificing fuel efficiency.  Sound and emissions are also improved and meet the US EPA Tier 3 regulations, which go into effect in 2012. 

Electronic shift and throttle - The new D3 is equipped with Volvo Penta's electronic EVC system as standard.  This includes electronic shift and throttle all the way from the controls to the engine and drive.  This means softer, more exact and safer driving for customers without having to make adjustments in the future. 

EVC also makes it simple to install additional accessories and functions such as:

  • Low-speed mode
  • Trip computer
  • Engine data in the chart plotter via NMEA
  • 7" color display

Joystick functionality - A joystick option is available for twin engine installations with electronic steering only.  This makes for easier docking and maneuvering in congested areas. 

Drives - The D3-140 and D3-170 models are available with the SX or DPS Duoprop drives.  The D3-200 and D3-220 models are available only with the DPS Duoprop drive. 

Propellers - With the new drives comes a  new I-series propeller blade.  The new, highly efficient, patented designed, blades are thin, but strong and are made of aluminum with the same class as stainless steel.   

Quiet and vibration free - The new D3 has a very low noise level due to its common rail and multi fuel injection system.  The new engine cover further reduces engine sound.  The current D4 and D6 engine mounts are also installed on the D3 to increase on-board comfort.

For Volvo Penta gasoline engines where the oil filter may be difficult to reach, Volvo Penta offers a solution with its remote oil filter kit. The kit mounts onto the oil filter assembly on the exhaust riser for ease of service. This kit is particularly useful for narrow engine rooms or twin-engine installation.

On-board kits are now available for the D4 and D6 diesel engines.  Kits for both engines include: oil filter, oil filter bypass, two air filters, drive belt, alternator belt, fuel filter insert, fuel water separator insert, impeller kit, bushings, lock springs, hose clamps, cable ties and electrical tape.  Purchasing an on-board kit is a quick and convenient way to keep spare parts on board.  Plus, purchasing a kit will save you money over purchasing individual parts.  Please call for price and availability.

Engine Monitoring Display

The convenient Volvo Penta Engine Monitoring Display Instrument displays the cirtical engine functions of electronically-controlled diesel engines. such functions include engine rpm, fuel consumed per hour, total fuel used, turbo boost pressure, trip engine hours, total engine hours, coolant temperatures and battery voltage. The Engine Monitoring Display Instrument also sounds alarms for disturbances in battery voltage, turbo boost and coolant temperatures, and may also be used to remind you when it's time for your next engine service. Customize the display with features such as analog or digital display, eight languages and metric conversion. The Engine Monitoring Display Instrument is designed for use in 12- or 20volt applications.
