VOLVO PENTA IPS DRIVE SYSTEM
For Volvo Penta D4 and D6 engines.

The Volvo Penta IPS System

ips_engines_new.jpgLove boating, but hate docking?  Wish there was an easier way to control your vessel into and around those tight docking spaces without risking damage to your vessel, dock and other boaters?  Then the Volvo Penta IPS system is just what you are looking for.

Exceptional handling & maneuvering - Volvo Penta IPS (Inboard Propulsion System) provides you with exceptional handling and maneuvering all with the touch of an "arcade-style" joystick.  The joystick function provides complete boating control in any direction - forward, backward, diagonally, sideways and complete rotations - with only one hand.  The joystick responds to your personal touch with accuracy and since IPS drives are easy to control, they make high and low speed maneuvers easy.   Joystick functions are available on the new D4 and D6 engine packages.  Volvo Penta plans to release a gasoline sterndrive joystick option, available for purchase in late December 2009.  It will be available as a factory twin-engine installation option only and cannot be retrofitted.

Safe & reliable - IPS drives are also safe and reliable.  All parts in constant contact with sea water consist of either bronze or stainless steel to help prevent corrosion and keep marine growth minimal.  It provides more safety features when linked with the EVC system.

More efficient than inboard shafts - Compared to traditional inboard shafts, IPS drives offer 35% better efficiency.  With counter-rotating, forward facing propellers working in undisturbed water, IPS drives produce a completely horizontal thrust with faster acceleration, higher top speed and lower fuel consumption, a major plus in today's economy.

Clean & comfortable - The IPS system offers all this without sacrificing onboard comfort or the environment.  Exhaust emissions are virtually eliminated with minimal vibrations and a reduced sound level.

Compared to other inboard shafts, Volvo Penta IPS drives provide:

  • 50% better turning radius
  • Up to 50% lower perceived sound level
  • 35% better fuel efficiency
  • 20% higher top speed
  • 15% faster acceleration
  • Improved onboard space

Availability - For diesel applications, the IPS system is available on D4 and D6 engines.  For further information, and/or to pick up a brochure, please visit our office or call us at 727-327-6512.
